From Gloria:
Hard to believe we are on Day 9 already!
5 of us enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at the Dayville Cafe. The brioche french toast was a big hit! My Eggs Benedict was phenomenal, but I wish I had gotten the french toast. Food envy~
Today was our first rainy day, so we started late. Tom, Tim & Sean stayed at a different hotel last night, so they had to drive over to the Fish House Inn & RV Park to meet us. I believe we left at about 9:45 a.m. with our rain gear on. Within an hour, we had all shed the rain gear - it was getting hot and making us sweaty. The rest of the day we rode without rain.
Tom had his first coffee in 2 weeks. An espresso place in Dayville made a pretty good cappuccino especially for him.
Dayville is absolutely one of the friendliest towns we have encountered so far. Everyone seems to know everyone. Especially the lady who was our waitress last night. She had some awesome dreadlocks and hugged everyone!
A piece down the road in Mt. Vernon, Deb & Valerie ran into an elderly man with no front teeth. In his Oregonian drawl, he gave them the impression that there wasn't really much to do in Mt. Vernon...just wake up every day and keep on going. We found a wonderful picnic spot for lunch at Holliday Park in Mt. Vernon.
Our ride today provided us with spectacular scenery. We had views of the snow-capped Strawberry Mountains, horse and cattle farms, and the never ending John Day River.
And the John Day River.
We arrived at the Hotel Prairie in time to have our usual Happy Hour.
We have been joined by Tom Eng (a friend of Eric's from CDC).
Tom Keegan, Tim and Sean are staying in John Day and found a wonderful restaurant there called the Snaffle Bit. We drove there for dinner. The atmosphere was festive (even though they had to rush to set up a table for us due to a misunderstanding), the food was excellent, the waitress was THE best. She had a memory like and elephant~
Sean was the overall winner today in eating and riding. It's mind-blowing to watch him play guitar; super amazing to watch him ride his bike.
But watching him eat is a wonderment. I don't know where he puts it. Admittedly I haven't asked his shoe size yet!
Tomorrow we ride on to Baker City. What a wonderful life!
