August 2 - Owensboro, KY to Rough River Dam State Park, KY

Written by Gloria

So yesterday after arriving in Owensboro early and looking forward to sightseeing a bit, I developed a cold.  Darn it!  I didn't want to share my germs, or sit in a nice restaurant sneezing, coughing and blowing my nose, so I stayed in the hotel room and missed what I heard was a really good dinner at the Miller House with Michael, Eric, Megan and Pat.  I'll have to be sure to tour Owensboro the next time I'm in town.

Eric, Megan and Pat also went on a tour to a winery.  I've been hearing that elderberry wine is very good for colds.  Too bad I can't drink a glass of it before we ride.

We got another early start today because of the predicted weather - not heat this time...we were concerned about rain.  Owensboro had thunderstorms off and on from yesterday afternoon.  The group was glad to have a car to get them from the Miller House back to the hotel.  Rain was in the forecast for later this afternoon.

Our breakfast stop was at Dee's BBQ & Diner.  It is advertised as the best breakfast in town.  We arrived shortly after they opened at 5:15.  The breakfast was pretty good.  The waitress asked us where we were biking from and to (as you can imagine, we're asked this a lot).  When we told her, she shared it with the cook, who used a word she couldn't repeat.

The highlights of the day:
1.  No real dog issues
2.  My cold didn't slow me down too much
3.  We beat the rain - ok - we did get a little wet and a tad nervous when it thundered, but we basically out ran the rain
4.  There were a lot more towns (and open stores) between Owensboro and Rough River Dam State Park than we originally thought.
5.  Michael and Eric have done some amazing map reading using Google and Maps.me in lieu of the Adventure Cycling Association Maps that we normally use.  We did follow some parts of the ACA map today.
6.  After 51 miles, we arrived in Rough River Dam State Park, where we met Debbie Deppe, and her husband, Keith.  Debbie retired from CDC a few years ago.  She, Keith and Bob have thrown back quite a few beers together at Mo's.  They treated us to a nice dinner at the park restaurant.  We are looking forward to having them trail along with us tomorrow as our SAG.

The Lowlight of the day:
Megan and Pat had to go back to living their daily lives.  Thanks for all the support, Megan, Pat and Danny!

Life is great!
