August 3 - Rough River Dam State Park, KY to Hodgenville, KY

Written by Michael

Gloria, Eric, and I left Rough River Dam this morning around 6:10 am.  (Debbie and Keith, our SAG drivers for most of the day, had enough common sense to sleep in.)

A few miles down the road a brave deer dashed across the road in front of Eric. Eric quickly slammed on his brakes in order to avoid the deer. That was probably the closest any of us have gotten to a deer on this trip.

The three of us stopped for breakfast at a delightful little restaurant four or five miles down the road.  It was interesting to hear some of the locals discuss politics.  It was quite clear that the press and other such bad guys are out to get our president.  That our president just might be guilty of some highly questionable things and just might be flat out lying on multiple occasions was not even something they considered.  Our country has a long way to go to get any semblance of unity.

Shortly after breakfast our SAG drivers quickly caught up to us.  We were delighted to have their company, cold drinks, and food all the way to Sonora.

We stopped for lunch near a convenience store in a spot that provided shade and enjoyed the sandwiches, chips, cold drinks, and company provided by Debbie and Keith. As an added bonus, they had scrumptious chocolate cake that we enjoyed for dessert.  That cake was the highlight of our day.

The hills today were relatively mild, the traffic was relatively light, and the shoulders were mostly non-existent. All of those combined made a rather pleasant day. We especially enjoyed the ten or so miles of virtually no cars whatsoever.  That always allows us to enjoy the scenery  and watch for wildlife.

The one drawback today was that it started to thunder and eventually rain about 15 miles before we reached our destination.  Luckily we had just enough time to put on our rain jackets before the downpour let loose.  The rain didn't last too long and it was sunny again by the time we reached our cabin.

In Sonora we bid goodbye to Debbie and Keith. It was great to have them with us, but we certainly appreciated that they took the rain with them when they left.  Thanks for joining us, Debbie and Keith!

Much to our delight, this cabin has two bedrooms, another twin bed in the living room, a washer and dryer, and a kitchen to provide for all our creature comforts.  It is a great deal for $75 a night.  We ordered pizza for dinner as we are around 3 miles from town.  We will eat the leftovers for breakfast before we head to Bardstown tomorrow.

Another great day comes to a close.  We are going to sleep tonight hoping that the rain will hold off tomorrow.
