August 5 - Rest Day - Bardstown, KY

Written by Gloria

Today is Marcus' birthday, so thirteen of us celebrated by following this itinerary (theme if the day = bourbon):

8:15am - we left the Hampton Inn in Bardstown on a Mint Julep tour bus.  Don was our driver.

9:30am-10:30am - at our first distillery, we did the Bulleit Blade & Bow Tasting.  It was our favorite because our tour guide was lively and tasted with us.  It was a hoot!

11:30am-12:15pm - Heaven Hill Connoisseur Tasting - our tour guide on this was a bit of a "Sip Nazi" - she called me out when I sipped the bourbon before she told us to sip.  Seriously?

We had box lunches on the bus as we drove to Maker's Mark.

1pm-3pm  - Maker’s Mark Tour/Tasting -

The most interesting thing about this tour were the Chihuly art pieces scattered around the premises.  They were amazing!  We had fun oohing and ahhing over them as we toured the facility.

3:30pm-5pm  - Limestone Branch Private Tour/Tasting - this was our 2nd favorite because it's a small distillery and Steve Beam (from the famous Beam Family) signed the bottles of alcohol that we bought.  Plus, our tour guide was very theatrical in telling the story of the distillery...and they made us special cocktails.  Lastly...everyone in the store sang happy birthday to Marcus.  It was pretty cool and a great way to end our bourbon tour.

After resting for a few hours, we had our bicycle meeting for the folks who are joining us for the next 6 days.  At the meeting, we decided our departure time and route.  We were also joined by Hamid Jafari, and his lovely daughter, Zainab.  Hamid was Bob's boss before he retired.  They worked very closely together.

Sixteen of us enjoyed a delicious dinner at The Rickhouse Restaurant and Lounge.  We sat outside on the patio where we could see the full moon.  The weather was perfect.  My Bourbon Blueberry Salmon dish was perfect as well.  We all sang happy birthday to Marc again.

Stacey (the most wonderful daughter-in-law in the world) deserves a lot of credit for putting together our fantastic bourbon tour and getting us reservations at the Rickhouse.  Everyone had a fabulous time!  Many, many thanks, Stacey!

It is a big job getting everyone ready for the ride tomorrow.  Michael worked extra hard checking out the route and getting all the maps printed up and ready to go.  Thanks, Michael!

What a great life!
