July 31 - Cave-In-Rock State Park, IL to Henderson, KY

Gloria

We are definitely not in Kansas anymore!  Because...there are hills here, Folks!  Some have not been very kind.  Today I walked up two hills.  They must have been 75% grade~

We started our 65 mile day at Rose Kountry Kitchen in the town of Cave-In-Rock.  The waitress allowed us to come in early, so we could catch the ferry across the Ohio River.  We were the only bicycles on the ferry.

About 1 mile after crossing, we entered Kentucky.

We decided not to follow the ACA route today.  A gentleman in a pickup truck who shared our ferry warned us that there would be a mega hill on our chosen route.  That hill was like 5 hills combined!   I walked up the end of the first part and the last part.  These were not Gloria sanctioned hills!

A note here about loose dogs & their owners.  In this farming area, dogs are just outside.  Sometimes the owner is around and will try call the dogs off, but honestly they're not very successful.  Still..they all explain to us how the dog won't bite.  We're always skeptical, and we wish they would just put the dogs inside a fence or something.  We had one chase us by crossing a very busy road.  He could have been killed! Crazy.

We've talked about the kindness of folks all along, and today was no different.  Eric stopped for shade near the house of a family near Geneva, Kentucky, and they gave him cold water and invited him to sit and chat for a bit.  When Michael and I caught up with him, they gave us water and invited us as well.  Not long after that, I needed a bathroom break but found that the convenience store was closed. A lady who lives next door to the store invited me in to use her restroom.  Wow!

Our surprise of the day was being joined for lunch at the Subway in Marshfield by Eric's fiancée, Megan, and her mother, Pat.  Pat lives in Evansville, Indiana, right across the river from our hotel.  They brought drinks, ice and yummy cookies for us.  Thanks Megan and Pat!

Dinner was a belated birthday celebration for Eric at Pat's condo.  Pat, Megan, and Pat's
brother, Danny served up a feast!  We were also joined by Pat's sister, Jenny and Danny's significant other, Laura.  What a wonderfully hospitable and generous group of people!

Yet another great day~
